Project Description

Background

New technology and new methods of warfare have created new defense challenges. Besides traditional defense methods, we need to create new solutions for protection. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), such as First Person View (FPV) drones are actively used in different areas, such as military operations to reconnaissance, surveillance of terrain and attack. Conflicts happening in Europe and other parts of the world last years, where the UASs are a new way of warfare. Observations of drones different places in Norway, recently causes uncertainty among civilians and the need of insuring safety and well-beings as well as guarding soldiers, motivates to create technology that can detect and alert about UASs presence and can help to protect people.

Goals

The goal of this project is to develop a potential solution for this problem. Based on stakeholders requirements defined by from KDA, the group will develop a concept where we show how we want to solve the problem. To limit the scope of the project we chose to focus on detection of FPV drones, which are widely available and relatively cheap, so they can be obtained by different actors. Mainly will the system be designed for military use in field, where soldiers can detect drones even at the places that can not be reached by vehicles, like forests with rich vegetation or landscapes with challenging terrain. The goal is to deploy the system easy and quick so users can survey the area where the military operations are happening.

This project is a proof of concept and the final product will be built of prototype parts and commersially available components, within the given budget. The system will be tested in different environments, which the group have access to, to evaluate the performance of the system and to meet the requirements defined by KDA.

Final Product

Final product will be presented at EXPO. Stay tuned!
