Introduction

Introduction

Kestrel Systems is a bachelor group formed in Kongsberg. The group consists of six students from three engineering disciplines. The group was formed in the early summer of 2024, and used the autumn to search for a project to work with as our bachelor thesis in the spring semester of 2025. After sending out requests and applications to different enterprises and industries, we got a response from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and were invited to their headquarters for an idea briefing. Both parties quickly came to an agreement on what the project should be, and that is how Kestrel Systems was born.

Group Name

The name for this project was inspired by the common name given to multiple species of predatory birds from the falcon family. Kestrels have the unique characteristics of hovering above the ground when they are out hunting. This is done to identify the prey before they dive towards the ground for an attack. This hovering characteristic aligns with the main characteristic of our own project, where drones will be hovering above the ground while surveilling.
