At present most boat are powered by lead battery for electric power when the engine is not running. These batteries are in comparison significantly heavier, have longer charging time, lower charging efficiency and lower volume-power ration than lithium batteries. On the other hand, charging lead batteries safely is simpler compared to charging lithium batteries.

One of the challenges of charging lithium battery with dynamos, is the fluctuating voltage and current delivered by the dynamo and potential overheating of the dynamo itself. Therefore, stabilizing the output to the batteries are necessary for safe charging and protecting the dynamo from overheating.

Currently the market does not provide any affordable and easy to implement solution for charging lithium batteries. Therefore there exist a gap in the market for developing lithium battery chargers that provides the above mentioned qualities. Taking these points above into consideration, the client Electronics & Energy Solutions AS (EES) aims to develop an affordable and easy to integrate dynamo powered lithium battery charging system. This thesis addresses the development of a voltage and current regulating system, which makes it possible for the clients current system to charge lithium batteries from a dynamo.
